BASICS
CHARACTER NAME: Emil Sinclair

CANON: Limbus Company

CANON POINT: Post Hell's Chicken (Intervallo I)

AGE: No specific age given because Project Moon is mean, but he's estimated to be around late teens or, at most, early twenties. For the time being, I'm assuming he's around 19!

BACKGROUND
HISTORY: World information and Emil's personal history.

PERSONALITY: Answer three of the following questions. Limit this section to 500-1,000 words in total, or 150-300 words per question.

  • What impression does your character give when meeting someone for the first time? How does the first impression differ from your character’s true nature?
  • Sinclair's initial impressions, like most people, tends to fluctuate depending on his surrounding circumstances. In "casual settings" (as casually as it gets in the City, anyway), he gives off the air of a somewhat demure young man, with manners and a temperament to match his more sheltered upbringing. He's gently supportive, friendly (in a timid, tentative way, rather than outgoing), and relatively non-confrontational, preferring to mediate between disputes in a way that's considerate of others. He comes across as a more agreeable person when compared to his older and frankly rather intimidating coworkers, but this demeanor combined with his want to do "the right thing" (plus his lack of experience) can make him seem somewhat naïve with the backdrop of the City behind him. Another character summarizes him, quite succinctly, as a baby bird preparing to emerge from it's shell.

When encouraged to emerge, Sinclair does a surprisingly good job at shattering the image of fragility that most will likely get from him. While he can seem unreliable with how transparently he voices his displeasure/surprise with the grotesque and cruel things he experiences in his line of work, his ability to persist and overcome difficulties is particularly noteworthy. Sinclair's potential is repeatedly highlighted, and he's much more observant and capable than the greenhorn image he gives off (though mostly played for laughs, he is Very Good at instinctively understanding the Wild acronyms of Ryoshu, as an example).

Besides that, he can be surprisingly ruthless and bloodthirsty, exemplified most clearly with how easily he cuts down Inquisitors during Canto III, going so far as to stab a corpse over and over and over in a blind rage. He's more tumultuous than one would expect, with a lot of internal feelings and trauma that can overflow unexpectedly. He's processed some of this from his canon point, but he's still got a bit of a surprising temper when pushed to his limits. Overall, he is the Good Boy that he comes across as! He's just capable of a lot more than one would think, both good and bad.

  • How does your character handle stress? What do they do in an emergency?
  • Sinclair is... both terrible and not terrible at dealing with stressful situations. Terrible because — as noted previously — he is incredibly transparent about the fact that he's stressed out, and also very transparent about what, exactly, is stressing him out. Arguably, you might say this means he's incredibly good at handling stress, as he's made it somewhat of a habit to grit his teeth and work through the things that bother him. And a lot of things bother him!

While he might not be your go to for someone who can stay calm through an emergency, he's definitely someone who you could expect to make it through the other side of one, regardless of what it might be. Sinclair is quite good at persisting, and seeing things through when 1) necessary, and 2) when he puts his mind to it. Of course, this is also dependent on the situation. He's more confident in getting put out of his comfort zone and earnestly attempting things that might be difficult for him, but those shreds of confidence also make it so he's not going to grin and bear hopeless things he doesn't need to bear, or that he doesn't have a personal stake in.

Fighting through your PTSD and past trauma? Necessary and personal, so he'll do it even if he's going through incredibly horrific things. Cooking chicken while a group of women scream conflicting instructions in your direction? He'll try his best at first, but ultimately he's going to quit and throw his apron on the ground in one of those surprising displays of his temper.

  • What are some of your character's regrets? How is your character impacted by them?
  • His biggest regret? Indirectly (or perhaps directly) causing the death of his family due to both his fear and his inability to act. That is a defining curse and motivation for Sinclair, the pain pushing him forward towards growth while crippling him at times due to the overwhelming fear and hatred that event instilled in him.

Motivationally speaking, Sinclair's insistence during Canto III to not run away from the source of his despair or the things that scare him can be clearly linked to that regret, as that was a direct consequence of his cowardice. He's incredibly driven to not repeat that same mistake, and his need for both personal revenge and stopping what he views as atrocities done by Nagel und Hammer pushes him onward despite the crippling nature of his fear. He's definitely always been the type to "want to do the right thing," but having such a terrible thing happen to him shattered his world and... kind of forced him to grow up, in some ways, forcing him to actually do the things he wants to do and become the person he wants to be. Unfortunately, there's no denying that such a motivation comes with the price of pretty heavy emotional scars, to the point that he has difficulty looking at recordings of Kromer and the events of Canto III even after her death. Understandably, of course.

Regardless, one of Emil's overarching themes is based on duality, and how he processes his regrets follows this. He holds onto his regrets quite closely, using them as motivations, reminders and "never again"s... though he holds all the feelings involved, as well. A positive and a negative!

    POWERS
    SKILLS/ABILITIES:
    • Revival: As a result of their connection with Dante, the Sinners of Limbus Company can be revived from death. Regardless of the nature of the injury, they can be reversed and healed, as long as Dante is available to "turn back the clock."

    • E.G.O.: Summarized as equipment manifested from the human mind. Emil's personal E.G.O. takes the form of prison robes and a large halberd resembling a tree. He can also take on E.G.O. based on Abnormalities (basically entities also manifested from the human mind)... though this comes with the risk of corrosion, causing the thoughts/emotions of the Abnormality to take over his own awareness, which makes him incapable of differentiating friend from foe. His personal E.G.O. does not have this drawback.

    • Identities: Basically borrowing the abilities/personality of a self from another universe to increase combat abilities through the use of technology. Increased use of an Identity causes hallucinations and isn't... great for the person's mental state, but it's fine.

    • "The Sign": THIS ONE IS... Mysterious. This manifests as a red mark on the forehead of particular people, noticeable only by other bearers. It's not clear what exactly having such a mark gives you (though One Person who has it does do some pretty supernatural things), nor the circumstances one needs to achieve to bear the mark (it's only noted that people who have it are "special" and will get to see the "new world." Total cult sounding stuff). Sinclair hasn't fully "manifested" his regardless, but in game, having it does give him a slight increase to his combat abilities. Not that it mattered much because he still got rolled in the end.

NERFING: Revival is Dante's ability, so it's not something Sinclair can do! IDs will be unavailable. As for E.G.O., that'll also be unavailable until regained. As for The Sign, as said before, Sinclair hasn't... manifested his properly, and it's still a big ??? what that is, so I'll leave that unavailable as well. He is essentially just a regular human who can Wield A Halberd Good sometimes.

WEAKNESSES: None! Just a regular loser human.
